Made from wood and often decorated, it was used in special ceremonies to honor gods or make important agreements. The Chancay people, known for their skilled crafts, made keros that were both useful and artistic. Finding one in Chancay shows that they took part in important traditions before the Inca Empire rose to power.<\/p>\n<p>Tumbler-shaped drinking vessels\u2014called keros when made of wood and <i>aquillas <\/i>when made of gold and silver\u2014were used in Peru to consume <i>chicha<\/i> (corn beer) for hundreds of years before the Inca came to power.<\/p>\n<p>Provenance: Estate of David
