Dinosaur Extinction Layer

65 Millions Years old- Discovered in North Dakota, U.S..

Size is 2 inches tall and weighs about 18 grams.

This vial contains a soil sample from the K-T Boundary layer, scientifically known as the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-P) Extinction layer. First recognized by scientists in the 1980’s then confirmed worldwide, this layer contained high levels of micro meteorites and the element Iridium, (extremely rare here on earth but abundant in asteroids).

The site of the asteroid impact, known as the Chiculub Crater, was discovered in 1990 near the Yucatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico. It is 300 kilometers (190 miles) wide. Further investigations at the site solidified the asteroid extinction theory. All together 75% of all species on Earth vanished after the impact, including all terrestrial and marine dinosaurs. This allowed for the evolutionary growth, of smaller species, especially mammals, which in the wake of the KP extinction became the dominant life on planet Earth.
