Description
Eurypterus Remipes
Upper Silurian 432-418 million years
Fiddler Green Formation, Herkimer, NY
Size is about 6.5 by 5.5 inches and weighs about 47 oz.
Eurypterus remipes was a type of sea scorpion that lived around 432 to 418 million years ago during the Upper Silurian period. It had a long body, paddle-like limbs for swimming, and claws to catch prey. Fossils of this creature are often found in the Fiddler Green Formation in Herkimer County, New York. It was one of the main predators in its shallow sea habitat, and its well-preserved fossils help scientists learn about early sea life and arthropods.
Members of Eurypterus averaged at about 13 to 23 cm (5 to 9 in) in length, but the largest individual discovered was estimated to be 60 cm (24 in) long.
