The Canyon Diablo meteorite is a striking and well-known meteorite that fell in Arizona, forming the famous Barringer Crater, also known as Meteor Crater. Estimated to have arrived on Earth around 50,000 years ago, this iron-nickel meteorite is composed primarily of a mixture of nickel and iron, along with trace elements such as cobalt, phosphorus, and sulfur. The impact of the meteorite, which was likely about 150 feet in diameter before striking Earth, released an immense amount of energy, creating a crater roughly 4,000 feet in diameter and 570 feet deep. Fragments of the Canyon Diablo meteorite have been studied extensively and are prized by collectors, as they provide valuable insight into the composition of celestial bodies and the dynamics of extraterrestrial impacts.
